Matthew Arnold Papers, 1850-1886.

The collection contains eight autographed letters by Arnold, English poet, essayist and inspector of schools. The letters are to literary and government figures including George Denman, Emily Faithfull, Mrs. Russell Barrington, Mrs. Annie Adams Fields, William Parsons Atkinson, Mrs. Charles Callahan Perkins, Charles Hamilton Aïdé and Charles Myhill. The collection also contains photocopies of letters from libraries in England and Wales which Arnold wrote to family and academic colleagues. These correspondents include John Ward, Edward Hamer, Rev. J.P. Mahaffy, Andrew Miller, Rev. The Vice Chancellor of Cambridge, James Dixon, David Masson and Norman MacColl.
